Movies

Mostly contains movies though I've sneaked in a few TV Shows. In chronological order of watching (mostly).

Cold War (2018)

Pawel Pawlikowski

Rating: ****

The Scent of Green Papaya (1993)

Anh Hung Tran

Rating: ****

maybe someday i will get tired of watching movies that feel like a pigment taken out of lives of "ordinary" people, but today is not that day

Incendies (2010)

Denis Villeneuve

Rating: ****

Capernaum level of disturbing

Return to Seoul (2022)

Davy Chou

Rating: ****

i loved the movie but god it was impossible for me to sympathise with the protagonist. i felt much more empathy for her father, whose character saved the entire movie.

Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021)

Ryusuke Hamaguchi

Rating: ****

Long Day's Journey into Night (2018)

Bi Gan

Rating: *****

a perfect movie

Drive My Car (2021)

Ryusuke Hamaguchi

Rating: ****

it's very rare that an adaptation resonates stronger with you than it's original text, but that just goes to show how masterfully this was directed and interpreted.

Kaili Blues (2015)

Bi Gan

Rating: *****

the long scene in the second half is hands down the greatest I've ever seen. it felt like a dream there's so much to uncover about this movie: the kind of movie that deserves multiple watches.

Through the Olive Trees (1994)

Abbas Kiarostami

Rating: ***

Only Yesterday (1991)

Isao Takahata

Rating: ****

Where Is the Friend's House? (1987)

Abbas Kiarostami

Rating: ***

The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)

Martin McDonagh

Rating: ***

The Holdovers (2023)

Alexander Payne

Rating: ***

Maborosi (1995)

Hirokazu Koreeda

Rating: ****

All We Imagine as Light (2024)

Payal Kapadia

Rating: ***

felt like the kind of movie that is made to win awards and is successful in that end. make of that what you will.

Breaking the Waves (1996)

Lars von Trier

Rating: **

obsessively morbid

The Song of Sparrows (2008)

Majid Majidi

Rating: ***

The End of the Tour (2015)

James Ponsoldt

Rating: **

Another Round (2020)

Thomas Vinterberg

Rating: ****

takes a silly premise and builds a painfully real portrait of mid life existential crisis. loved it.

Four Lions (2010)

Christopher Morris

Rating: ****

I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006)

Park Chan-wook

Rating: *****

Capernaum (2018)

Nadine Labaki

Rating: *****

Manchester by the Sea (2016)

Kenneth Lonergan

Rating: ***

Photograph (2019)

Ritesh Batra

Rating: ****

a tranquil watch. personally, i found miloni's character deeply moving. beautiful soundtrack too.

Holy Spider (2022)

Ali Abbasi

Rating: ***

The Iranians really know how to make a movie.

Milestone (2020)

Ivan Ayr

Rating: ****

Great movie. Explores a ton of topics though doesn't dedicate itself to any, which is probably my only grievance with it. But an engaging and sublime watch nonetheless, by bollywood standards anyway.

There Will Be Blood (2007)

Paul Thomas Anderson

Rating: ****

The White Balloon (1995)

Jafar Panahi

Rating: *****

Exceedingly beautiful, makes you empathize with a world beyond yet so near.

All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001)

Shunji Iwai

Rating: *****

what the fuck was this movie

Right Now, Wrong Then (2015)

Hong Sang-soo

Rating: ****

very engaging, even though the cinematography is humble. would've been nicer to have a bit more the of background of the characters, though the movie does drops subtle hints. don't get me wrong though: it was a very satiating watch. would recommend.

Past Lives (2023)

Celine Song

Rating: ****

beautiful cinematography, very pleasant to watch, and profound. has given me a lot of stuff to think about: especially the question of pragmatism vs idealism.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

Paul Thomas Anderson

Rating: ***

Close-Up (1990)

Abbas Kiarostami

Rating: ****

I had profound feelings of sonder throughout this movie: I see Soznain as almost an ideal victim of his circumstances, perhaps as the movie intended. I loved the somewhat contrasting situations Mahrdad and Soznain find themselves in, even though both are interested in art. This movie is terrifying reminder of how much suffering exists in this universe, and how little of it is acknowledged. It's the sort of movie that can cause Marxist awakenings, if there is such a thing.

Taipei Suicide Story (2020)

KEFF

Rating: *****

Coherence (2013)

James Ward Byrkit

Rating: *****

Paris, Texas (1984)

Wim Wenders

Rating: *****

A perfect movie, I wouldn't change a thing. The minimalism really helps you connect deeply with the characters. It's slow and chaotic in the first half and beautifully comes together in the second half, reminiscent of "Taste of Cherry" and then it leaves you with a deep sorrow in the end.

Salaam Bombay! (1988)

Mira Nair

Rating: ****

The movie is dark and traumatising. Definitely a bollywood gem, infinitely more well-written and produced than any so-called "underrated" drama like Pyaasa. Very realistic and subtle by Bollywood standards.

There Is No Evil (2020)

Mohammad Rasoulof

Rating: ****

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Iranians really know how to make a movie. As if the screenplay and cinematography weren't gorgeous enough already, what really puts soul in this movie is that it is a real life piece of rebellious art: it is banned in Iran and the director is jailed.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

Hayao Miyazaki

Rating: *

I definitely did not find it as profound or artistically complex as people around me made it out to be. The story line seems too chaotic yet lacks the spontaneity of, for example, Your Name. Gave it half a star extra because for me it's eye candy. It can be (and is, for many) a good and easy comfort movie.

Taste of Cherry (1997)

Abbas Kiarostami

Rating: *****

Taste of Cherry is exactly my favorite kind of movie currently: meditational and introspective.

Perfect Days (2023)

Wim Wenders

Rating: ****

So slow and subtle, as the highest form of art should be. It's not the kind of movie with moral paradoxes that make you think for days, but in my opinion a piece of art which teaches you new ways to feel, and hence stays with you for an even longer time. At the beginning of the movie I could relate to why Hirayama found his life contentful, but his trite routines pretty soon made me question if a person can ever live contentfully this way. As the movie progressed, I felt I could understand Hirayama more and more, and by the end of the movie, the way he lived made complete sense to me. I would highly recommend this movie, but it's definitely not for the less patient.

12th Fail (2023)

Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Rating: **

Anatomy of a Fall (2023)

Justine Triet

Rating: *****

Ways of Seeing (1972)

John Berger

Rating: *****

Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Hayao Miyazaki

Rating: ***

cute. but not much more.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Wes Anderson

Rating: *****

So entertaining! This was my first Wes Anderson movie, and I had some preconceived notion of his hip cinematography, but I never expected it to be so engaging!

Normal People (2020)

Rating: *****

Conversations with Friends (2022)

Rating: *****

The Big Short (2015)

Adam McKay

Rating: *****

Margin Call (2011)

J.C. Chandor

Rating: *****

A Hidden Life (2019)

Terrence Malick

Rating: ****

Beautiful cinematography which kept me hooked throughout the movie. Though I felt the characters were a little too fantasized and out-of-touch with reality, I loved the storytelling style.

Lady Bird (2017)

Greta Gerwig

Rating: ****

National Theatre Live: Fleabag (2019)

Tony Grech-Smith, Vicky Jones

Rating: ****

Cunk on Britain (2018)

Rating: ****

Omkara (2006)

Vishal Bhardwaj

Rating: ****

Spirited Away (2001)

Hayao Miyazaki

Rating: ****

A Separation (2011)

Asghar Farhadi

Rating: *****

had to call my mom like a child because of how realistically disturbing this was. highly, highly recommend.

Three of Us (2022)

Avinash Arun

Rating: *****

what a beautiful movie

Super Deluxe (2019)

Thiagarajan Kumararaja

Rating: ****

Veer-Zaara (2004)

Yash Chopra

Rating: *

Why did I waste three hours of my life thinking this is some cult classic that I'm missing out on?? To be fair to the movie the cinematography and the sets were decent at times, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about this movie.

Amour (2012)

Michael Haneke

Rating: *****

Moonlight (2016)

Barry Jenkins

Rating: *****

Days of Being Wild (1990)

Wong Kar-Wai

Rating: *****

Before Midnight (2013)

Richard Linklater

Rating: *****

Before Sunset (2004)

Richard Linklater

Rating: *****

Before Sunrise (1995)

Richard Linklater

Rating: *****

Fallen Angels (1995)

Wong Kar-Wai

Rating: *****

In the Mood for Love (2000)

Wong Kar-Wai

Rating: *****

Chungking Express (1994)

Wong Kar-Wai

Rating: *****

let's just say this movie was my cinematic awakening.

Joyland (2022)

Saim Sadiq

Rating: *****

Broke my heart. Highly recommend.

Lady Bird (2017)

Greta Gerwig

Rating: *****

Haider (2014)

Vishal Bhardwaj

Rating: *****

Your Name. (2016)

Makoto Shinkai

Rating: *****

Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Ruben Ostlund

Rating: *****

Highly entertaining, though not everyone would like this style of film-making.

Bitter Lake (2015)

Adam Curtis

Rating: ****

Lotawana (2022)

Trevor Hawkins

Rating: ****

I loved what the film was trying to potray, but the screenplay felt a bit lost at times. Still recommend.

Aftersun (2022)

Charlotte Wells

Rating: ***
